Morristown Medical Center has been ranked the number one hospital in New Jersey for the fifth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report in its 2022-2023 Best Hospital rankings. The medical center is one of the top acute care hospitals in New Jersey to be nationally ranked, and among the 50 best hospitals in the nation for Orthopedics (#23), Obstetrics and Gynecology (#28), and Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#46). Morristown Medical Center was also ranked the number nine hospital in the New York Metro area.

Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center remained highly ranked in New Jersey and within the region as the number five hospital in New Jersey and tied for 22nd in the New York Metro area. Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center combine to make Atlantic Health System New Jersey’s only health system to hold two top-five ranked hospitals. These recognitions are among the dozens of U.S. News & World Report honors earned by all Atlantic Health System medical centers this year.

Atlantic Health System’s Chilton Medical Center was recognized as high-performing in four areas: COPD, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure and Stroke. Newton Medical Center was also recognized as high-performing in four areas: COPD, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure and Stroke. Hackettstown Medical Center received two high-performing ratings: Kidney Failure and Stroke.

The annual Best Hospitals ranking and ratings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

For the 2022-2023 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. For the first time, U.S. News rated eligible hospitals in Ovarian Cancer Surgery, Prostate Cancer Surgery and Uterine Cancer Surgery. In the 15 specialties, 164 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

“The hospitals named to the U.S. News Honor Roll excel across numerous specialties and service lines,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”
