Employment Population Ration at 60.4 Percent in September 2023
In September 2023, the proportion of the population that is employed, known as the employment–population ratio, was 60.4 percent for people age 16 and older for the third month in a row. The ratio has been between 59.9 percent and 60.4 percent since March 2022.
The employment–population ratio for adult men was 67.9 percent in September 2023, while the ratio for adult women was 57.1 percent for the second consecutive month. Prior to August 2023, the employment–population ratio for women 20 years and over had not been above 57.0 percent since February 2020 (57.4 percent).
For teenagers (age 16 to 19), the employment–population ratio was 32.3 percent in September 2023, compared to 32.6 percent in September 2022.
The employment–population ratio was 63.8 percent for Asians, 60.3 percent for Whites, and 59.3 percent for Blacks in September 2023. The ratio was 64.2 percent for people of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity.
