new report by California-based collection agency The Kaplan Group shows New Jersey is among the states that has the highest percentage of temp workers in the nation.

At the top of the list is South Carolina, where temp workers account for about 3.3% of the workforce, or roughly 71,120 people. Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia and New Jersey each have temp shares around 2.8%-3.2% of their workforces, with total temp workers ranging from about 99,700 to nearly 190,000.

Fifth-place New Jersey’s share of the workforce that are temp workers is 2.8%, or 115,810 workers. The percentage of workers that are part time is 15.9% and their unemployment rate is 3.7%. New Jersey’s current jobless rate for all workers is 5.4%.

The 10 states with the highest percentage of full-time employment are all Southern states, with percentages of 84.9% and above. They are also among the states with the lowest minimum wage in the nation.

The Kaplan Group said in its report that temp employment has fallen about 22.8% from its March 2022 peak of roughly 3.18 million workers to about 2.45 million in December 2025.

Temporary work is not distributed evenly across the country. The state snapshot in the dataset ranks states by “share of workforce that are temp worker,” along with total temp workers, full‑time and part‑time shares and unemployment rates.
