A Look At Managed & Transparent Data Center Expansion in NJ

Focus NJ released a report Sept. 29 arguing that New Jersey should pursue managed and transparent expansion of AI data centers rather than broad restrictions or moratoriums.

The report, “Setting the Record Straight: The Economic & Strategic Case for AI Data Centers in New Jersey,” examines common arguments raised by critics of AI data center development, including concerns over energy use, regulatory oversight, local economic impact, air pollution, water consumption and noise.

Focus NJ said the report supports a balanced policy approach that recognizes the challenges posed by data centers while also weighing their potential economic and strategic benefits.

“There is no question that AI data centers face a challenging narrative in New Jersey at this time,” Focus NJ Executive Director Althea D. Ford said. “Some of the concerns are valid, while many others are simply not rooted in fact or data.”

The report cites several economic findings, including that New Jersey’s data center industry contributed $31.09 billion to the state’s gross domestic product in 2024. Focus NJ also said the sector added $3.46 billion in local and state taxes for New Jersey from cross-state spillover effects and supported 172,020 direct and indirect jobs in 2024.

Nationally, the report said the data center industry’s total contribution to U.S. GDP grew from $768 billion in 2023 to $926.9 billion in 2024. It also said data centers drove 80% of the growth in U.S. final private domestic demand in the first half of 2025.
